一、教學目標:
你想破解廣告的操弄手法,不被牽著鼻子走嗎?
新聞媒體這麼多,各家說各話,真相難道只有一個?
你相信童話是美好的、無害的嗎?應該讓小孩讀童話嗎?

Course description:

Critical literacy views readers as active participants in the reading process and invites them to move beyond passively accepting the text’s message to question, examine, or dispute the power relations that exist between readers and authors. It focuses on issues of power and promotes reflection, transformation, and action (Freire, 1970). Critical literacy is “learning to read and write as part of the process of becoming conscious of one’s experience as historically constructed within specific power relations.” (Anderson & Irvine, 1993). It is also “to read the words and world”. In this course, three types of texts are used for critical literacy practicing: print advertisements and commercials, news, and literature (novels and children’s fairy tales).

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, students will:
1. obtain the knowledge regarding what critical literacy means
2. analyze ads, news and literary works in terms of visual literacy, language literacy, media literacy and critical literacy, and
3. reflect on their own stereotypes and prejudices through textual/counter-textual example analysis, accept multiple perspectives, understand social injustice, and engage in actions to change the status quo.
