一、教學目標:
Course description:

Critical literacy views readers as active participants in the reading process and invites them to move beyond passively accepting the text’s message to question, examine, or dispute the power relations that exist between readers and authors. It focuses on issues of power and promotes reflection, transformation, and action (Freire, 1970). Critical literacy is “learning to read and write as part of the process of becoming conscious of one’s experience as historically constructed within specific power relations.” (Anderson & Irvine, 1993). It is also “to read the words and world”. In this course, three types of texts is used for critical literacy practicing: commercial ads, children’s fairy tales and picture books, and news.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this course, students will:
1. develop critical perspective on literacy per se
2. learn how to critique specific texts
3. learn how to read discourses critically
