一、教學目標：
Course description:
This course introduces the origins of western literature, tracing back to Ancient Middle East, Greece, and Rome. We will begin with the Hebrew Bible to explore the relationship between God and man, and then move on to the literature of Ancient Greece, majorly on two literary genres: epics and tragedy. This semester will end with a study of the Roman epics. All the literary works will be discussed against the historical and cultural background under which they were created. The course will be given mainly in the form of on-line lectures. The monthly face-to-face class will proceed in the forms of lectures and small group discussions.
Course objectives:
In the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. gain an understanding of western literature within the cultural background of the time being,
2. identify important themes and genres recurrent in ancient western literature, and
3. analyze the ancient literary works in terms of modern perspectives.
